Don't judge a book by its cover...

Well…why not?

Unless you’re supremely organised and spend precious free-time researching your next pleasure-reading experience, or you’re more nifty than I with your chosen internet-enabled portable device, then without actually reading the book, the cover is all you really have to go on to decide if the book you have in your hand is a literary diamond in the rough or just some crap waste of your time.

I’ve recently chosen, as this weeks reading experience, Slam by Nick Hornby. It looked like a bit of a boys book with skateboards and those doodles that appear in school notebooks when you’re waiting for your teacher to finally get to the point…but among those doodles was a name very similar to mine in an ornate script in the middle of a love-heart and I found myself curious. On further inspection I find out that it is a book about a guy who skate-boards and the mention of Tony Hawke brings back obscured memories of a podcast I listened to about 6 months ago. I remember that the author sounded pretty interesting and the section of the book that he read out was funny but touching at the same time.

I took the opportunity to borrow the book immediately and it is sitting on my desk next to me waiting for my lunch break so that I can get started on it. I’ve already flicked through it a little and the first page I stopped on made me laugh out loud so I have pretty high hopes for this one.

My next read. Chosen for its cover.

Have you ever chosen a book for an interesting cover? Throw us a comment with a link to the pic and tell me what made you choose it and how it turned out. Was the cover deceptive, making a dull book seem more interesting, or was it everything you had hoped and dreamed of?

Tomorrow when the war began- THE MOVIE

It’s finally happened!

Just saw the exciting trailer for the MUCH anticipated movie of John Marsden’s Tomorrow When the War Began series. It’s been a loooooooong time coming and its finally coming out this September! Yay!
The Tomorrow series is about a group of teenagers who discover that their country (Australia) has been invaded while they were away camping, and they join the fight against the enemy. The books are excellent and I definitely recommend you go and read them now. The general consensus is that the movies will either be fantastic or a total flop, and if its anything like the trailer suggests it will be great. Can’t wait!

There’s a couple of trailers out there, this is one of them

New Books!!

Hey Guys,

Some new books have just been put in the teen zone…

Check out some of these

Fragile Eternity – by Melissa Marr

Seth never expected he would want to settle down with anyone – but that was before Aislinn. She is everything he’d ever dreamed of, and he wants to be with her forever. Forever takes on new meaning, though, when your girlfriend is an immortal faery queen.

Aislinn never expected to rule the very creatures who’d always terrified her – but that was before Keenan. He stole her mortality to make her a monarch, and now she faces challenges and enticements beyond any she’d ever imagined.

In Melissa Marr’s third mesmerizing tale of Faerie, Seth and Aislinn struggle to stay true to themselves and each other in a milieu of shadowy rules and shifting allegiances, where old friends become new enemies and one wrong move could plunge the Earth into chaos.

You Know Where to Find Me – by Rachel Cohn

First cousins Laura and Miles grew up like sisters. Miles thought of Laura as the golden one — smart, beautiful, rich, and popular — while Miles considered herself the unwanted one — an unattractive, underachieving outcast. Laura’s suicide shatters Miles and leaves her feeling completely alone, and sets Miles on a dangerous downward spiral. But in the strength Miles finds in herself and in those she didn’t believe cared about her, she is able to rebuild her life in unexpected ways.
