Boy in the Striped Pajamas
The Boy in the Striped Pajamas is John Boyne’s heart breaking story about Bruno, whose father runs at a Nazi concentration camp and his forbidden friendship with a Jewish boy, Schmuel, imprisioned in the camp.
Boyne’s book has been turned into a film is generating lots fo buzz in the US where it opens on the 14th of November. Unfortunately we will have to wait until March next year for it to open here in Australia.
But while you are waiting, why not read the book? old copies here at Mosman Library and as we all know, the book is always better than the film, right?

New Book
We have a great new book on the shelf here at Mosman. It’s called ‘Letters to a Bullied Girl’.
From the publisher’s web site:
‘Olivia Gardner, a northern California teenager, was severely taunted and cyber-bullied by her classmates for more than two years. News of her bullying spread, eventually reaching two teenage girls from a neighboring town, sisters Emily and Sarah Buder. The girls were so moved by Olivia’s story that they initiated a letter-writing campaign to help lift her spirits. It was a tender gesture of solidarity that set off an overwhelming chain reaction of support, encouragement, and love.’
Here’s a taste:
If bulling has touched you or someone in your life, this is a MUST READ!

New Hitchhiker's Book!
Big news out of the UK.
As if he weren’t busy enough, it looks like Eoin Colfer has been commissioned to write the sixth book in the cult classic Hitch Hiker’s Guide To The Galaxy Trilogy. (so far called a trilogy in 5 parts…) Apparently Douglas Adams always had plans to write a sixth book before his untimely death in 2001.
Colfer, known for very popular Artemis Fowl series, is over the moon about this new project. The next book, titled And Another Thing…, is set for an October 09 release.
Here is the full story.
For more about Eoin Colfer check out his web site and here is more about the Hitch hiker’s series
If you want to get up to speed on the series or reread Hitch Hiker’s for the 10th time, Mosman Library has copies of all of the books (plus a few more written by Adams).

Tim and Johnny strike again
Apparently Johnny Depp is going to play the Mad Hatter in Tim Burton’s remake of ‘Alice in Wonderland’.
This got the people over at Best Week Ever thinking about what OTHER kids’ books the Tim/Johnny team should remake.
‘Where the Wild Things Are’ would be brilliant, but ‘Teen Wolf’? That might be a stretch.
What about Roald Dahl’s ‘James and the Giant Peach’? Or Shuan Tan’s ‘The Arrival’? Or maybe ‘The Phantom Tollbooth’ by Norton Juster, Johnny would make a fantastic be Milo.
Can you think of any other classic kids’ books that Tim Burton could take on?

Book Week Winners Announced!
The Australian Children’s Book Week winners were announced today and the winner in the category of books for older readers is…. (drum roll please)
THE GHOST’S CHILD by SONYA HARTNETT
About the book:
The sky was pitch, and gashed by lightning; loutish waves rose and slumped heavily as mudslides. At a moment when she was filled with desperation, Maddy opened her mouth and yelled for Feather. And half-expected him to appear, because she wanted him to so much.
Maddy yearns for her life to be mystifying, to be as magical as a fairy story. And then one day, on the beach, she meets the strangest young man she has ever seen.
The Ghost’s Child is an enchanting fable about the worth of life, and the power of love. (from Penguin Australia)
The Ghost’s Child is available at Mosman Library
